On Embedding of Finite Metric Spaces into Hilbert Space

چکیده
Metric embedding plays an important role in a vast range of application areas such as computer vision, computational biology, machine learning, networking, statistics, and mathematical psychology, to name a few. The main criteria for the quality of an embedding is its average distortion over all pairs. A celebrated theorem of Bourgain states that every finite metric space on n points embeds in Euclidean space with O(log n) distortion. Bourgain’s result is best possible when considering the worst case distortion over all pairs of points in the metric space. Yet, is this the case for the average distortion ? Our main result is a strengthening of Bourgain’s theorem providing an embedding with constant average distortion for arbitrary metric spaces. In fact, our embedding possesses a much stronger property. We define the `q-distortion of a uniformly distributed pair of points. Our embedding achieves the best possible `q-distortion for all 1 ≤ q ≤ ∞ simultaneously.

Finite Metric Spaces and Their Embedding into Lebesgue Spaces
The properties of the metric topology on infinite and finite sets are analyzed. We answer whether finite metric spaces hold interest in algebraic topology, and how this result is generalized to pseudometric spaces through the Kolmogorov quotient. Embedding into Lebesgue spaces is analyzed, with special attention for Hilbert spaces, `p, and EN .
متن کاملEmbeddings of Proper Metric Spaces into Banach Spaces
We show that there exists a strong uniform embedding from any proper metric space into any Banach space without cotype. Then we prove a result concerning the Lipschitz embedding of locally finite subsets of Lp-spaces. We use this locally finite result to construct a coarse bi-Lipschitz embedding for proper subsets of any Lp-space into any Banach space X containing the l n p ’s. Finally using an...
متن کاملAmenability, Locally Finite Spaces, and Bi-lipschitz Embeddings
We define the isoperimetric constant for any locally finite metric space and we study the property of having isoperimetric constant equal to zero. This property, called Small Neighborhood property, clearly extends amenability to any locally finite space. Therefore, we start making a comparison between this property and other notions of amenability for locally finite metric spaces that have been...
متن کاملA Metric Space Not Quasi-isometrically Embeddable into Any Uniformly Convex Banach Space
We construct a locally finite graph and a bounded geometry metric space which do not admit a quasi-isometric embedding into any uniformly convex Banach space. Connections with the geometry of c0 and superreflexivity are discussed. The question of coarse embeddability into uniformly convex Banach spaces became interesting after the recent work of G. Kasparov and G. Yu, who showed the coarse Novi...
متن کاملExpansion properties of metric spaces not admitting a coarse embedding into a Hilbert space
The main purpose of the paper is to find some expansion properties of locally finite metric spaces which do not embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. The obtained result is used to show that infinite locally finite graphs excluding a minor embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. In an appendix a direct proof of the latter result is given. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary: 46B20; Sec...
متن کاملSome Fixed Point Theorems in Generalized Metric Spaces Endowed with Vector-valued Metrics and Application in Linear and Nonlinear Matrix Equations
Let $mathcal{X}$ be a partially ordered set and $d$ be a generalized metric on $mathcal{X}$. We obtain some results in coupled and coupled coincidence of $g$-monotone functions on $mathcal{X}$, where $g$ is a function from $mathcal{X}$ into itself. Moreover, we show that a nonexpansive mapping on a partially ordered Hilbert space has a fixed point lying in the unit ball of the Hilbert space. ...
